Why do we teach Music?

At Telford Infants School we aim to inspire a love and life-long appreciation of a wide range of musical genres, with all children becoming and seeing themselves as creative, music makers and singers themselves. Music allows children to increase their self-confidence, oracy and listening skills, creativity and a sense of achievement and enjoyment as musicians. 

 
How do we teach Music?

Our school has a bespoke music curriculum with a clear progression, where pupils become increasing confident at using their voices and instruments (tuned and untuned), to compose, perform and improvise in response to a wide range of stimuli. Our aim is that pupils will be ‘doing music’ as much as possible in lessons for example by singing, composing or playing and exploring musical instruments. We have a strong focus on singing at our school, lead by our singing specialist.

Where appropriate our music curriculum is linked to the half termly year topics, however it is primarily skills based and focussed upon developing the children’s musical skills, during their time with us. Our children participate weekly, in whole class music lessons and a singing assembly. In year 2, our children learn recorders in whole class sessions throughout the year.

All children have the opportunity to listen to and develop their oracy skills by appraising a wide range of music, including live performances, from different historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including listening to the work of the great masters. Children are encouraged to use musical vocabulary to describe what they hear. 

Through our partnerships with Warwickshire Music and Rock Steady, we enhance our children’s musical experiences through opportunities such as small group violin lessons, rock groups and live performances. We also have a large school choir.

 
How your child will make progress in Music during their time at Telford Infant School.
Our bespoke musical curriculum has a clear progression and by the time that they leave us, nearly all children will develop a strong internalised sense of pulse, rhythm and pitch and dynamics, through a wide rich range of musical activities including singing, moving, performing, composing and active listening. Where pupils have Special Education Needs (SEN), teachers will make adaptations to ensure that the lessons are accessible to all, allowing all children to make progress at their individual stage of learning.

Our aim is that all children will develop a love of music and of being a music maker themselves, which will be encouraged through their music lessons and by listening to a range of different historical periods, genres, styles and traditions. Pupils will develop their listening and appraising skills and these musical experiences will help them to develop preferences for music for these different styles of music by the end of KS1.

All children have regular opportunities to perform including to their class group, assemblies, Christmas performances and Harvest Celebrations, in which they will develop their singing and musical confidence.

EARLY LEARNING GOALS FOR EYFS
Communication and Language - Listening, Attention and Understanding
  • Listen attentively and respond to what they hear with relevant questions, comments and actions when being read to and during whole class discussions and small group interactions.
  • Make comments about what they have heard and ask questions to clarify their understanding.
 
Expressive Arts and Design - Being Imaginative and Expressive
  • Sing a range of well-known nursery rhymes and songs.
  • Perform songs, rhymes, poems and stories with others, and (when appropriate), try to move in time with music. 
 
NATIONAL CURRICULUM FOR MUSIC AT KS1
 
The national curriculum for music aims to ensure that all pupils:
  • Perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians.
  • Learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence.
  • Understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.
 
Key stage 1
Pupils should be taught to: 
  • Use their voices expressively and creatively by singing songs and speaking chants and rhymes.
  • Play tuned and untuned instruments musically.
  • Listen with concentration and understanding to a range of high-quality live and recorded music.
  • Experiment with, create, select and combine sounds using the inter-related dimensions of music.

MUSIC AT TELFORD INFANT SCHOOL
 
Singing at Telford Infant School.
Children explore singing through their daily learning at our school. Cross curricular learning often happens through songs that we learn during lessons and helps support social and emotional wellbeing. Singing is taught through our music lessons, weekly singing assemblies and extra curricular choir that is offered to children from Reception to Year 2 throughout the year. Children learn about high and low pitch, fast and slow rhythm and they practise matching pitch to sing as part of a group, following a melody. In singing assemblies and in choir, they also learn warm up and breathing techniques, such as: simple scales, humming, and tongue twisters. 
Children at Telford Infant school take a real enjoyment in their singing and our choir is always full of enthusiasm!
Listen to our recent Christmas performance to the whole school. We performed, 'What About Us' by pink and some children sang solo or in a duo which was extremely brave! We loved singing some of our Sparkyard Christmas sings too! 
 
 
Group Music lessons
 
Rock Steady Sessions
In-school rock and pop band lessons with Rocksteady! We partner with Rocksteady Music School to deliver fun and inclusive rock and pop band lessons, right here at Telford Infant School! These weekly music lessons take place in school and are led by highly trained professional musicians who know how to inspire a love for music. It’s the perfect way for children to learn new musical skills, make friends and have fun, all whilst boosting confidence, wellbeing, social skills and academic achievement.
More about Rocksteady: • There’s no experience necessary and all instruments for lessons are provided. • Lessons are open for children from year 1 to 2. Children learn up to 300 instrument, band, and performance skills, whilst playing songs they love.
