Friday 8th November weekly update

8th November 2024

Head's message

I hope everyone had a lovely half term break and a chance to recharge ready for the run up to Christmas. This week in school has all been about celebrating  Diwali and it has been lovely to see the children and staff dressed in bright festive colours and traditional dress as they learn about this important Hindu and Sikh festival of light.  See our Loving Learning and RE pages for photographs.

Mrs Smith, our PE lead, works hard to promote all kinds of physical activity across school.  We are thrilled to have been recognised for the FA Equal Access Schools award for 2024.  Please see our PE pages for more information.

Key dates
Please remember to check the calendar for upcoming dates.

Celebration of Learning
Please remember you are invited into school today from 3pm onwards to look at your child's learning.  Do you not have to book a slot, just pop in from 3pm to 3.20pm.

Tuesday 12th November - Year 2 trip
Please remember that Year 2 are visiting St John's House on Tuesday. Children need to wear their normal school uniform and arrive promptly to school so coaches are not missed.  If you have not yet paid for this trip please aim to do this before Tuesday.

Friday 15th November - Children in Need day
Children can come to school in normal school uniform and can accessorize with Pudsey ears and/or something spotty.  Donations for this worthy cause are greatly received. Please see the flyer sent in your email.

Tuesday 19th November - Learning to Learn evening - 6pm - 7pm
You are invited to come onto school to find out more about how your child learns reading, phonics and maths and how you can support them at home.  The feedback from this event has always been positive and we urge you to attend. Adults only please.

Friday 29th November - Grandparents Glitter day - save the date
Grandparents will once again be invited into school for either the morning or afternoon to work with their grandchild to make Christmas cards, calendars and decorations.  This is a really popular event and you will be required to book a slot.  Further information on how to do this will be sent out in next Friday's communication.

Parking and poo
Thank you to everyone who has spoken to me about the continuous inconsiderate parking and dog fouling.  We are in contact with the police (who patrolled Kelvin Road on Monday and spoke to some drivers) and the dog warden about these ongoing issues. One of our school governors who is a Councillor is also looking into other possible solutions (no promises though as often these things are beyond our control). In the meantime, SLT are armed with poo bags if needed and will remind drivers about being responsible.

Outdoor clothing
Thank you for providing wellies for your children.  If you have not done so yet, it is not too late - please ensure they are named and send them in a carrier bag.  Please remember that your child also needs a warm, waterproof coat with a hood.  These items mean that they can continue to play outside at break and lunchtime in light rain conditions without getting wet.

Lock down drill
As part of our statutory duties we need to practice fire and lock down drills.  We have already practiced our fire drill this term and the children followed the instructions very well.  This half term we will practice the lock down drill.  Our lock down 'alarm' is a recording which says 'the elephants are dancing'. We explain to the children that Elmer and her friends are dancing outside and we need to practice hiding in the classroom and being very quiet.  Please be reassured that the children are told about what to do before the practice and it is done in a sensitive way. Children that need extra support are given it. Please talk to your child about this if you feel it will help them.

Have a lovely weekend.
